Asian American Voters Targeted by Racist Mailers sent by Conservative Right Wing Organization
ATLANTA,GA - In the week leading up to the midterms, the households of Asian American voters across the state of Georgia, have been receiving hateful, racist mailers, aimed at suppressing the growing power of the Asian American vote.
Targeted ads and mailers were sent by the American First Legal Foundation, the conservative organization founded by Trump confidant Stephen Miller. Miller has a long history with peddling racist hate and division and was the architect behind the Trump Administration’s family separation program, which led to the widespread images of kids in cages that shocked the nation. Outside of Georgia, mailers have been received in Arizona, Virginia, California, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas over the past week and digital and radio advertisements have also popped up across the country.
“These mailers show us that right-wing Republicans see our growing political power as a threat. Asian Americans are the fastest growing population both nationally and in Georgia. AAPI voters are poised to play a significant role in this year’s midterms across the U.S. We know our voters vote based on their values and will not be pawns in a racist agenda to drive a wedge between Asian Americans and other voters of color.
This misinformation campaign will not succeed,” said Aisha Yaqoob Mahmood, Executive Director of the Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF).
This attempt at suppression comes after Georgia’s Asian Americans hit record turnout rates in 2020 and 2021 - becoming the margin of victory in deciding the country’s president and Senate majority. ”Our voters will not be deterred by misinformation and race-baiting. AAAF has been working year round to build deep connections with Asian Americans in Georgia, and mobilize AAPI voters. We will continue to educate our voters about candidates and the issues on the ballot. We are talking to voters at their doors, on the phone, and showing up in places our voters frequent. Our digital ads, print ads, billboards and mailers are reaching AAPI voters across our state,” said Vyanti Joseph, Political Director of AAAF.
AAAF will continue to educate and engage with Asian Americans in Georgia on the issues that matter and call out such blatant attempts to discourage political engagement and seek to mislead and harm the AAPI community.
