Our Statement
The Asian American Advocacy Fund unequivocally stands in solidarity with Palestinians and their right to freedom and sovereignty.
As Asian Americans whose families and ancestors have known the brutality of colonization and Western imperialism, we call on our communities to join in support and speak out to end Israel’s oppression of Palestinians. Our histories show a parallel with the dehumanizing structures used to justify violence against Palestinians. These are closely tied to the same forces of white supremacy that perpetuate systemic racism against our own communities and have justified mass atrocities in the name of national security.
Our hearts ache for lives lost as we bear witness to the genocide of Palestinians. As of writing this, the Palestinian health ministry reports that 5,087 people have been killed in Gaza, and all generations of Palestinian families will continue to be wiped out if we do not see an immediate ceasefire.
This is a humanitarian crisis: The brutality and unfathomable violence of this moment cannot be overstated nor overlooked.
We are reminded of the War in Vietnam, the covert bombing campaign in Cambodia, the Philippine-American War, the partition of India, the division of Korea, and many more atrocities carried out under western imperialism in disregard for, and devastation of Asian lives.
This dehumanization has already resulted in violence against Muslims and Palestinians in the U.S. and around the world. We mourn Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year old Palestinian-American child killed by his Chicago landlord, and are horrified by reports of additional attacks.
Let us be clear: violence against our communities is unacceptable and we condemn the rhetoric that has led to anti-Palestinian racism, Islamophobia, and anti-semitism. We hold our community members, friends, and colleagues close as we know that all of our fates are intimately intertwined.
Our taxpayer dollars directly fund the occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people, as the United States sends upwards of $3.8 billion in military aid each year to Israel. This is furthering the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people who have no army, no navy, and no air force. The mainstream media is framing the most recent escalation of violence as the "Israel-Hamas war." We want to be clear, this is not a war, this is a genocide.
We must see the United States end its support for the illegal occupation and apartheid system in Palestine. We wholeheartedly denounce the ongoing colonization of Palestine by Israel, and reject the United States’ military and diplomatic support of the brutal apartheid system that continues to operate in Palestine. The Israeli military regularly violates international law and commits war crimes against Palestinians–including bombing Palestinian hospitals, evacuation routes, medical staff, reporters, schools, and neighborhoods. We need accountability on the world stage.
Each of us has a stake in speaking out against Israeli occupation and the genocide of the Palestinian people. The most immediately available action is a ceasefire. We ask you to join us as we echo calls across both Palestinian and Jewish communities in demanding a ceasefire– call and email your Representatives (links in bio) and ask them to sign onto the Ceasefire Now Resolution. We also deeply understand that only through an end to Israel’s brutal occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people, can an environment of peace emerge.
We stand in committed solidarity with the people of Palestine and want to see a Free Palestine, from the river to the sea, within our lifetime.
