Awet “Howard” Eyasu

About AWET “Howard” EYASU (he/him):
Councilman Eyasu was born and raised in Eritrea. He attended the University of Asmara in 1996 and graduated in 2000 with a degree in History and a minor in Political Science at the top of his class. He was accepted by UCLA Graduate School, joined the African Area Studies Department in the Fall of 2000, and received his Master’s degree in African History in 2002.
Councilman Eyasu moved to Clarkston in 2002. He has been an active participant in the local community and is a graduate of the Clarkston 101 Citizen Education program. With motivation from his family and an interest in the City’s future, he decided to run for the Clarkston City Council and was elected to the office on November 3, 2015 and re-elected in 2019.
Why We’re Endorsing:
During his council tenure, Councilman Eyasu served as the Vice Mayor from 2018 to 2023. After eight years of service, he believes that the work is not finished. As the only New American currently serving, he feels obligated to continue to represent his community, especially the immigrant community which makes up half of Clarkston’s population.
