Asian American Advocacy Fund Endorses Trailblazing Woman of Color in Statewide Election

Campaign Endorses Renitta Shannon for Lieutenant Governor 

ATLANTA -- Today, the Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF) made a historic endorsement for a woman of color leader to statewide office: Renitta Shannon for Lieutenant Governor. 

“Georgia’s working families and communities of color have been hard at work building power and championing for immigrant rights, gender equality, and racial justice,” said Aisha Yaqoob Mahmood, Executive Director of Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF). “By electing leaders like Renitta Shannon for Lieutenant Governor, Georgia can lead the nation in expanding democracy and ensure that the voices of our diverse communities – Black, brown, Asian, immigrant, young, elderly, working, and individuals with disabilities – will always be heard.”

“Renitta Shannon is a champion for democracy, immigrants, and families,” said Vyanti Joseph, Political Director of AAAF. “With a strong Lieutenant Governor, Stacey Abrams will have a partner in state office who shares our commitment to restoring integrity in our government, and who will fight to uphold our values of racial and economic justice, healthcare, and education for all.” 

“Shannon embodies a new wave of Georgia leaders that truly represent us and the values of a progressive Georgia,” said Mahmood. “Each candidate we are endorsing has strong roots in our communities. Most are women of color and all are committed to a just, democratic, and inclusive Georgia where each of our families can thrive.”

AAAF will reinvigorate the infrastructure and organizing networks built in 2020 that critically turned out Asian American voters—the fastest growing population in Georgia. AAAF’s comprehensive voter mobilization in the 2020 election led to record voter turnout among newly registered Asian American voters and helped secure the victories of Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in the U.S. Senate in 2021.

This effort will complement AAAF’s larger policy agenda of empowering Asian American Georgia residents to create a society in which all community members can thrive.
