Asian American Advocacy Fund Announces Diverse Group of Candidate Endorsements

Campaign will Reach Asian American Voters in Effort to Elect Progressive Candidates 

ATLANTA -- At the heels of another contentious Georgia legislative session where voting rights were at the forefront, the Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF) announced their support for six candidates for office in the 2022 primary elections: Reverend Raphael Warnock, U.S. Senate, Nikema Williams, 5th Congressional District, Lucy McBath, 7th Congressional District, Nabilah Islam, State Senate District 7, Ruwa Romman, State House District 97, and Bentley Hudgins, State House District 90.

“These candidates represent us and a progressive Georgia,” said Aisha Yaqoob Mahmood, Executive Director of AAAF. “Each candidate we are endorsing has strong roots in our communities. Most are women of color and all are committed to a just, democratic, and inclusive Georgia where each of our families can thrive.”

“Our communities are critical to the state primaries this May,” said Vyanti Joseph, Political Director of AAAF. “This is our opportunity to shape and lead on the issues we care about: from protecting voter rights, to expanding our democracy, to pushing for meaningful support for communities of color hit hardest by the worst economic and health crises of our lifetimes. Let’s mobilize and elect this progressive slate of leaders.”

AAAF will reinvigorate the infrastructure and organizing networks built in 2020 that critically turned out AAPI voters—the fastest growing population in Georgia. AAAF’s comprehensive voter mobilization in the 2020 election led to record voter turnout among newly registered Asian American voters and helped secure the victories of Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in the U.S. Senate in 2021.

This effort will complement AAAF’s larger policy agenda of empowering Asian American Georgia residents to create a society in which all community members can thrive.
