Asian American Advocacy Fund Endorsed Candidates Advance to General Election

ATLANTA —  The Asian American Advocacy fund (AAAF) celebrates the wins of six of their endorsed candidates.

  • Lucy McBath - Democratic candidate, 7th Congressional District

  • Nabilah Islam - Democratic candidate, State Senate District 7

  • Ruwa Romman - Democratic candidate, State House District 97

  • Reverend Raphael Warnock - Democratic candidate, U.S. Senate

  • Nikema Williams - Democratic candidate, 5th Congressional District

  • Stacey Abrams - Democratic candidate, Governor

These candidates represent a path toward a new Georgia, a progressive Georgia, where all communities can thrive.

Lucy McBath’s decisive win on Tuesday May 24th, was a bittersweet victory as the country mourned for the victims in Uvalde, Texas. “We need leaders like Lucy McBath with a history of fighting for racial justice and against gun violence to push for change in Georgia,” said Aisha Yaqoob Mahmood, Executive Director of AAAF

AAAF’s winning candidates include women of color who will make history if elected in November. If elected, Nabilah Islam, Democratic candidate for State Senate District 7, would be the first Muslim woman to be in the Georgia Senate, and will join the ranks of other Asian Americans in the State Senate. Additionally, if elected in November, Ruwa Romman, Democratic candidate for State House District 97, would be the first Arab American elected official in the Georgia Legislature and the first Muslim woman to be in the State House of Representatives.

“Our endorsed candidates ran people-powered campaigns rooted in the community,” said Mahmood. “We are proud to see them advance and we remain committed to support them to victory on November 8th.”

“Our candidates have a track record of working closely with grassroots organizations and activists,” said Vyanti Joseph, Political Director of AAAF. “This is a critical opportunity for our communities. Let's mobilize and elect these leaders who care about protecting voter rights, expanding our democracy, and pushing for meaningful support for communities of color.”

Reverend Raphael Warnock, Nikema Williams, and Stacey Abrams, are candidates that AAAF has endorsed in the past, and continue to support because of their track record of supporting Asian American communities. “Our communities are excited to have the opportunity to re-elect Reverend Raphael Warnock and Nikema Williams, we are also seeing an incredible amount of support for our #AsiansforAbrams campaign which we have re-launched since 2018,” said Joseph.

AAAF will reinvigorate the infrastructure and organizing networks built in 2020 that critically turned out Asian American voters—the fastest growing population in Georgia. AAAF’s comprehensive voter mobilization in the 2020 election led to record voter turnout among newly registered Asian American voters and helped secure the victories of Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in the U.S. Senate in 2021.

This effort will complement AAAF’s larger policy agenda of empowering Asian American Georgia residents to create a society in which all community members can thrive.

The Asian American Advocacy Fund is a grassroots 501(c)4 social welfare organization dedicated to building a politically-conscious, engaged, and progressive Asian American base in Georgia.
