Asian American Advocacy Fund Doubles Down on Public Education, Diversity, and Equity in the Classroom

Campaign Endorses Adrienne Simmons for Gwinnett County Board of Education, District 4 

ATLANTA -- Today, the Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF) endorsed Adrienne Simmons for the Gwinnett County Board of Education, District 4 Runoff Election.

“Adrienne Simmons is a champion for our children, families and teachers,” said Aisha Yaqoob Mahmood, Executive Director of Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF). “By electing such a strong and passionate leader at the local level, we can help ensure that public schools across Gwinnett county are bastions of diversity and learning and remain safe havens for our most vulnerable students.”

The Board of Education seat will be decided by the Runoff on June 21st. AAAF urges voters to mobilize and protect this seat for the diverse constituents it represents. “Gwinnett County is home to an incredibly diverse and growing population,” said Vyanti Joseph, Political Director of AAAF. “In Gwinnett County, there are more than 100 different languages and dialects spoken in households, and the student population represents more than 180 countries. We need leaders like Adrienne Simmons on our local board of education. She will continue to fight to address inequalities, and she will celebrate the diversity of teachers, students and families. Let’s mobilize and get her elected.”

Republicans are attempting to take over County Board of Education seats so they can continue to take funding away from public schools and implement exclusionary curriculums that do not respond to the needs and perspectives of Georgia’s diverse students. Asian Americans, Black, Latinx, and other communities of color are fighting to take power back from the hands of a wealthy few and elect leaders who represent all of us. AAAF is working hard to turn out Asian American voters in 2022 and envisions a Georgia where the Asian American electorate is recognized as a critical part of the vibrant coalition of progressives pushing for a New Georgia and a New South.
