Rep. Matthew Wilson

Georgia State House, District 80

ABOUT Matthew Wilson:

Rep. Wilson is a former public school teacher, lawyer, and Griffin native who is committed to bringing principled, effective leadership to the State House. He is a strong advocate for access to affordable healthcare, revitalized infrastructure, and quality education. His commitment to public service and economic opportunity for all Georgians make him an excellent candidate to represent us on the issues that matter most.

WHY WE’RE ENDORSING Matthew:

Rep. Wilson is a Griffin native who grew up in a working class family helmed by a former police officer and a retired respiratory therapist. Watching his family struggle to afford healthcare and basic necessities after his father became physically disabled instilled in Rep. Wilson a drive to pursue economic security and healthcare equity at a young age. Rep. Wilson used that experience as a foundation and would later go on to commit himself to public service through his work with Teach for America and his community involvement with organizations like Red Clay Democrats, Stonewall Bar Association, and Georgia Watch.

As a lawyer, Rep. Wilson has worked with the State Bar Association and legislators to fight for expanded civil rights protections for every Georgian. His commitment to serving communities that have historically been marginalized has been demonstrated in his work and is a central piece of his platform. Rep. Wilson is fighting against gerrymandering and plans to institute a process where “voters choose their representatives, not the other way around.” Rep. Wilson also proposes an expansion to Medicaid that will ensure that more Georgians have access to healthcare- a critical necessity in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a former teacher, Rep. Wilson recognizes the challenges that Georgia teachers and students are facing in the classroom, and has made fully funded classrooms a priority. Education is a key tool for unlocking employment opportunities, social mobility, and financial security for generations. Investing in early childhood education, need-based financial aid and the HOPE scholarship program are all part of Rep. Wilson’s vision for a public education system that works for the residents of his district and across Georgia.

Representative Wilson has shown up to lead District 80 at a critical juncture. He is a committed public servant, leader, and advocate for equality, and the Asian American Advocacy Fund is proud to endorse him for District 80.
