Asian American Advocacy Fund Proudly Endorses the Candidacy of Maryam Ahmad
The AAAF Endorses Maryam Ahmad in her race for DeKalb County Commission Super District 6
Gwinnett County, GA, July 24, 2020 — Today, the Asian American Advocacy Fund is proud to announce our endorsement of Maryam Ahmad in her race for DeKalb County Commission Super District 6. Maryam is a community organizer and lifelong resident of DeKalb county with deep ties to its residents. Her journey in public service is one that is defined by her relentless pursuit of fostering empathy and building a better quality of life for marginalized communities.
Maryam is a first generation Pakistani-American with a background in epidemiology who has worked as a public health data analyst. During the COVID-19 crisis, she has always been a voice for low-income communities, especially immigrants and people of color, and will use her public health and community organizing experience to make sure DeKalb County recovers from the Coronavirus crisis. DeKalb Super District 6 is a majority-minority district and Maryam has spent her time distributing resources to her fellow community members and prioritizing their needs in order to better serve them and protect their health. We need Maryam in Super District 6 because she will continue to use her years of expertise and rely on her extensive community networks to spread information and resources throughout our community. In times of crisis, looking to leaders who have deep roots in our communities, and are personally impacted by the challenges we face, is a step toward protecting and revitalizing our neighborhoods on the other side of this emergency. As a woman of color and public health expert, Maryam can clearly articulate why it is dangerous to ignore the racial disparities of the pandemic and the harm caused by excluding immigrant families from economic impact recovery funds. Maryam has used her platform in the past to transform her communities by fostering empathy for our experiences through art, community organizing, and social justice advocacy. We need a champion like her in leadership in DeKalb Super 6. In order to navigate a tumultuous political season with xenophobic, racist, and misogynistic leaders at the forefront on the national level, we build power from the ground up by electing local leaders like Maryam who have a demonstrated commitment to systemic change.
To have earned an endorsement from the Asian American Advocacy Fund means that Maryam is using her platform to advocate for policies that protect the best interests of Asian American/Pacific Islander communities and progressive causes across Georgia and the nation. We are proud Maryam Ahmad has earned our endorsement and we wish her the best in her campaign to represent DeKalb Super District 6.
The run-off election in Georgia will take place August 11. The general election will take place November 3.
