Why we're endorsing Nikki Merritt: 

As a working mom and proud union member, Nikki values community engagement, social justice, and fighting for marginalized communities. We are endorsing Nikki because she has a thoughtful and experienced understanding of how racial and class representation at the legislative level can factor into better policy outcomes for the many diverse communities of Georgia.  

More about Nikki: 

Nikki Merritt is running for Georgia State Senate District 9, which includes Dacula, Lawrenceville, Grayson, Lilburn, Loganville, Snellville, and Tucker. Senate District 9 has a vibrant and growing AAPI community, and almost 46% of her district consists of minorities. She grew up in Austell, GA and is a 16-year resident of Gwinnett County. Currently, she resides in Grayson and is a mother, a wife, a dog mom, as well as a community advocate.

Nikki's parents grew up during an era of racial segregation in the South and have championed the efforts of the Civil Rights Era in the South. Thus, Nikki grew up valuing community engagement, social justice, and fighting for and alongside marginalized communities.

Nikki spent 23 years in a service career at AT&T where she was a member of her local labor union CWA 3204. As a working mom and union member, Nikki recognized the need for adequate healthcare for families across Georgia, and took note of under-resourced and under-supported public schools in her area.

Nikki plans to build and support legislation that will fight against the student loan debt crisis, poverty, voter suppression efforts across the state, and climate change while also continuing to advocate for civil and women's rights. She has additionally committed to building comprehensive solutions to end police brutality and racial targeting by law enforcement in GA.

We support Nikki because her policy agenda is inclusive and highlights issues that significantly impact Asian Americans both in her district and across Georgia. Her unwavering support for the many diverse communities and pro-immigrant legislation distinguishes her as a strong candidate. She has consistently shown up for our community but also understands the need to step back and listen to our communities.
