Asian American Advocacy Fund Celebrates Wins in Georgia Municipal Elections
Hard-fought Efforts to Reach Asian American Voters Led to Historic Local Level Wins
ATLANTA -- Today, the Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF) announced that five of their endorsed candidates won their races. “AAAF’s winning candidates represent a diverse Georgia. AAAF-endorsed candidates who won their election:
Awet “Howard” Eyasu - Clarkston City Council
Debra D. Johnson - Clarkston City Council
Madelyn Orochena - Kennesaw City Council, Post 1
Shenée Holloway - Duluth City Council, Post 5
Vinh Nguyen - Tucker City Council, District 2, Post 2
AAAF’s winning candidates are making history and increasing representation for communities of color in local level politics. Shenée Holloway is the first African American woman to be elected to Duluth City Council and Vinh Nguyen is the first person of color to be elected to Tucker City Council.
“We are elated to celebrate these wins, our communities made it clear that we want leaders who truly represent us,” said Ashna Khanna, Deputy Director of Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF) “and we are incredibly proud of our team who got out the vote for our endorsed candidates.
AAAF has long engaged in year-round organizing to activate and expand relationships with the Asian American community in Georgia. AAAF will continue to mobilize Asian Americans with a comprehensive voter mobilization program into 2024 to build effective, progressive power, focusing on key electoral races.
